Hyphen picks engineering consultant for USD-10bn green H2 project

Hyphen Hydrogen Energy has hired Austria-based ILF Consulting Engineers to provide project management and technical services for its flagship USD-10-billion (EUR 9.1bn) green hydrogen and ammonia project in Namibia.

Hyphen, a joint venture between Nicholas Holdings Ltd and German renewables developer Enertrag SE, said on Monday that the partnership agreement with ILF will back the delivery of the ambitious project. In addition to engineering and project management consultancy, the Austrian firm will deliver procurement and contract advice and support Hyphen during the implementation phase.

Hyphen’s flagship project envisages the installation of around 3 GW of electrolysis capacity powered by electricity from about 7 GW of renewables. The huge complex will be able to produce one million tonnes of green ammonia per year by 2027 and by 2029, its output is planned to reach 2 million tonnes annually for regional and global markets.

When operating at full scale, the hub will produce 350,000 tonnes of green hydrogen a year.

Hyphen was selected in 2021 as the preferred bidder to develop and operate the hub in the Tsau //Khaeb national park. In June, the government of Namibia decided to exercise its right to take up a 24% stake in the scheme.
