Norway grants EUR 65m to five hydrogen projects for maritime fuel
Nov 06, 2024 14:14 CESTNorwegian hydrogen technology company Hystar AS has been awarded a EUR-26-million (USD 28m) grant from the EU Innovation Fund for the installation and operation of its automated production line for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser stacks in Hovik, Norway.
The grant will support the delivery of an automated factory with an annual capacity of 1.5 GW, slated to start operation in 2027 and scale to 4.5 GW of annual capacity in 2031.

Hystar is already producing stacks in Hovik, with its current production line having a capacity of 100 MW per year.
“Our Hovik GW factory demonstrates our commitment to rapidly expanding our European operations and meeting the strong demand for our technology globally. The EU Innovation funding will enable us to drive unseen levels of cost and production efficiencies, which is particularly important across hard-to-abate sectors,” says Hystar CEO Fredrik Mowill.
In August, Hystar said it had awarded Germany’s thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering with the front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the supply of its automated line for the Hovik factory.
The European Commission this week announced it has selected 85 innovative net-zero projects to receive a combined EUR 4.8 billion in grants from the Innovation Fund under the 2023 call for proposals.
