Iberdrola awards contracts for green hydrogen project in Spain

Spanish utility group Iberdrola has hired two compatriots to help it put together a 20-MW green hydrogen production plant in Puertollano, Spain.

The contracts were awarded in a tender process to engineering companies Elecnor SA (BME:ENO) and Construcciones Electromecanicas Consonni SA, Iberdrola said.

The utility is investing EUR 150 million (USD 182.4m) to realise the project for fertiliser producer Fertiberia, which operates an ammonia plant in Puertollano. The green hydrogen set-up will consist of a 20-MW electrolyser, a 100-MW solar PV farm and a lithium-ion battery storage system of 20 MWh.

Elecnor will be in charge of the electrical assembly of the hydrogen plant and will supply equipment such as electrical panels and cabinets, support, conduits and luminaries. Consonni will manufacture the medium-voltage equipment, Iberdrola said.

Last year, Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser, a division of Norwegian hydrogen specialist Nel ASA (OSE:NEL), was selected as the preferred electrolyser supplier for the Puertollano project.

The hydrogen plant is due to start operation in 2021.

After first striking the agreement for their maiden hydrogen project, Iberdrola and Fertiberia committed to expanding the electrolysis capacity at Fertiberia’s plants to 800 MW by 2027. The roll-out will happen in four phases and will include again the Puertollano facility and spread to another Fertiberia site in Palos de la Frontera, southwest Spain.
