H-TEC to supply 1-MW electrolyser for H2 mobility scheme in Spain
Sep 17, 2024 11:56 CESTHydrogen storage tanks are starting to arrive in the industrial town of Puertollano, Spain, where Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) is building a 20-MW electrolyser to produce green hydrogen for fertiliser producer Fertiberia.
Each tank has a storage capacity of 133 cubic metres, and was manufactured to store 2,700 kilogrammes of hydrogen at about 60 Bars. The tanks are 23 metres high, have 2.8 metres in diameter and weigh 77 tonnes empty, Iberdrola said.
Due to their size, Iberdrola will have to carefully manoeuvre to allow the tanks to enter the site where two cranes will be used to assemble them, the company added.
So far, five of the planned 11 storage tanks have arrived. All were specifically designed for the Puertollano project and manufactured in the Spanish region of Asturias.
The electrolysis plant will be powered by a 100-MW solar PV farm with a lithium-ion battery storage system of 20 MWh. The goal of the project is to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia for Fertiberia.
Iberdrola and Fertiberia initially had an agreement to develop a 20-MW green hydrogen set up for the fertiliser plant in Puertollano. They later decided to expand the electrolysis capacity at Fertiberia’s plants to 800 MW by 2027 to include other sites in Spain.
