Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) has sealed a deal to deliver 20 GWh of clean energy annually to power the supermarkets of Supermercati Tosano in Italy.

The off-site power purchase agreement (PPA) has a term of 10 years and concerns a new solar power generating system, according to a press release.

Tosano operates more than 19 outlets and employs nearly 4,000 people across the country, including in Verona, Venice, Udine and Ferrara, among others. The PPA will result in the reduction of about 6,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions for the supermarket chain annually.

"Supermercati Tosano's medium-term Energy Plan envisages continuing with conviction on the path of energy production from renewable sources, increasing installed capacity, in order to constantly increase the self-produced share of total consumption from clean energy," said Tosano’s chairman Andrea Tosano.

Iberdrola has two operational solar assets in Italy. The company is currently building four other sites which, once operational, will increase its solar capacity in the country to 400 MW in 2025.
