Iberdrola wins enviro nod for 70-MW wind project in Castilla y Leon

Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) has received a favourable Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the development of a 70-MW wind project in the province of Burgos, the region of Castilla y Leon, it announced on Tuesday.

The project in question is the Iglesias wind farm, which will utilise turbines from Siemens Gamesa’s 5.X platform, a first for Spain, according to the developer.

Initially planned as a 92-MW facility, the project has been adapted to meet all environmental requirements, Iberdrola pointed out. It will be realised at a total cost of EUR 72 million (USD 76.5m) with the involvement of up to 260 industrial suppliers from the area. The turbines will be made locally too, with nacelles assembled in Agreda, Soria, gearboxes manufactured in Lerma, Burgos, and towers produced in Aviles and Linares.

Iberdrola also said it will install birdlife detection equipment at the project site in order to avoid any collisions with the turbines.

The company said that Castilla y Leon is the autonomous community where it has installed the most “green” megawatts – more than 5,100 MW. In Burgos alone, it has recently built or is developing over 550 MW between seven wind farms.
