Ikea adds over 2 MW of working solar capacity in Philadelphia area

Jul 31, 2012 - Swedish furniture retailer Ikea today said it had put in operation 2,208 kW of solar capacity at three locations in the Philadelphia area, bringing the number of solar systems ontop US Ikea stores to 29.

The company is building similar facilities at 10 other locations, which when completed will bring its total installed solar capacity to 38 MW in US.

The three systems, built by a local unit of German solar technology firm Gehrlicher Solar AG, include 1,142.4 kW at Ikea's Conshohocken store, 57.1 kW at the Conshohocken US office and 1,008 kW at the company's Philadelphia store. Together, the installations comprise 9,198 solar panels that are estimated to generate 2.65 million kWh a year. The amount is enough to offset 1,830 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Ikea intends to invest some EUR 590 million (USD 723.5m) in renewable energy globally over the coming three years.
