Ikea flips switch of 912-kW PV system at Texas store

Aug 2, 2012 - Swedish furniture retailer Ikea today celebrated the switch-on of a 912-kW photovoltaic (PV) array at its store in Frisco in the US state of Texas.

The solar system, developed and built by US grid-tied solar systems provider REC Solar Inc, includes 3,780 panels on a 114,000-sq-ft (84.9 sq ft) area. It will generate some 1.3 million kWh of power, enough to offset 1,016 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and supply 115 households a year, Ikea estimates.

This is the 30th finished system of Ikea's solar projects pipeline with a combined capacity of 38 MW at its US locations. Nine more solar systems are under construction.

Ikea added that it had allocated a total of EUR 590 million (USD 719.8m) for investments in renewable energy globally. It has installed some 250,000 solar panels at its stores worldwide and owns some 110 operational wind turbines in Europe.
