Ikea powers up 694-kW solar system at Pennsylvania store

Jul 17, 2012 - Swedish furniture retailer Ikea said Tuesday it had switched on a 694-kW solar power system at its Pittsburgh-area store in Pennsylvania as part of its sustainability efforts.

The store, located in Robinson Township, previously had a 31-kW installation under a power purchase agreement (PPA), which was removed to make way for the new system that is owned and operated by the furniture group. The array, developed and installed by US solar systems provider REC Solar Inc, includes 2,884 panels. It is expected to generate some 852,200 kWh of electricity per year, offsetting 648 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

This is the latest in a string of Ikea stores in the US to have a solar installation switched on recently. Ikea has completed or ongoing solar projects covering almost 89% of its US locations and representing 38 MW of capacity.
