Ikea powers up 941-kW PV system in Connecticut

Sep 21, 2012 - Swedish furniture retailer Ikea yesterday celebrated the start of operation of a 940.8-kW photovoltaic (PV) system at its store in New Heaven, Connecticut.

The system comprises 3,920 panels installed on 118,000-sq-ft (10,963 sq m) area and will generate some 1.1 million kWh of electricity, enough to supply 95 households and save 836 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year, Ikea calculates.

Gehrlicher Solar America Corp, a unit of German solar technology firm Gehrlicher, developed, designed and installed the PV system.

This is Ikea's 32nd finished solar project in the US, with seven more remaining under development as part of its 38-MW pipeline of solar projects at its US stores. The company has installed some 250,000 solar panels at its stores worldwide and owns some 110 operational wind turbines in Europe, it added.
