Ikea puts online 1-MW PV system at Utah store

Jul 26, 2012 - Swedish furniture retailer Ikea today celebrated the switch-on of its 1,015-kW photovoltaic (PV) system at its Draper store in the state of Utah.

The system spreads on a 180,500-sq-ft (16,769 sq m) area and includes 4,228 PV panels. It will generate some 1.5 million kWh of power, enough to supply 128 households and save 1,025 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year, Ikea estimates.

US grid-tied solar systems provider REC Solar Inc developed, designed and installed the PV system for Ikea. The company also cooperated with the city of Draper and utility Rocky Mountain Power on the project.

The PV system is the furniture retailer's 26th finished solar system at a US store, while as many as 13 solar projects are ongoing. Upon finishing all solar projects, Ikea will have total installed solar power capacity of 38 MW at its US locations.
