Ikea switches on 1-MW solar system at New Jersey outlet

Apr 10, 2012 - Swedish furniture retailer Ikea said Tuesday it had powered up a 1.063-MW solar power facility at an outlet in Paramus, New Jersey, in line with its sustainability strategy.

The solar system, developed and installed by US grid-tied solar systems provider REC Solar Inc, includes 4,620 panels. It is expected to generate 1,359,100 kWh a year, offsetting 1,033 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

At present, Ikea owns and operates 17 solar power systems at Ikea stores in the US, the Paramus facility included. Similar solar installations are in progress at 20 more locations, the company said. Once all are on stream, Ikea's total solar capacity in the country is seen to reach 30.8 MW.

Ikea owns over 330 stores in 40 countries. It has 38 outlets in the US.
