Scottish clean energy developer ILI Group said on Wednesday it has secured planning consent from the Scottish government for a 200-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project, further expanding its energy storage portfolio in Scotland.

To be located next to the Easterhouse national grid substation near Gartcosh, Glasgow, the Whitehill battery installation will provide key grid balancing services and help maximise renewables’ potential. The project received support from both Glasgow City Council and North Lanarkshire Council, the developer noted.

"The recent decision by Scottish Ministers validates the crucial role that battery storage will play in our energy transition. As Scotland continues to increase its renewable energy capacity, projects like Whitehill BESS are essential for providing the flexibility and resilience necessary to maintain secure and reliable energy supplies,” said ILI Group chief executive Mark Wilson.

ILI Group is developing a portfolio of over 4.7 GW of energy storage projects, including both pumped storage hydro and utility-scale battery storage.
