India ended the third quarter with 177.1 GW of renewable energy capacity in operation, including large hydropower stations, for renewables to reach a 41.8% share of the national power mix, new statistics show.

Quarterly deployments in the renewables segment rose by 3.7 GW from the second trimester when India had 173.4 GW of installed renewable power plants.

According to data by Mercom’s India solar project tracker and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), solar photovoltaic (PV) parks were responsible for 16.4% of the country’s overall installed power generation capacity and accounted for 39.4% of the renewables capacity. Those shares increased from 15.9% and 38.4% in the preceding quarter, respectively.

Wind farms represented 10.4% of the national power generation mix, while large hydropower plants (HPPs) had an 11% share.

At the end of September, India had 246.8 GW of conventional power plants generating electricity, which made up 58.2% of all installations. That capacity came mostly from coal-fired plants totalling 207 GW.

India has set a goal of having 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
