Indian govt works on special policy for rooftop solar units - report

(SeeNews) – Dec 13, 2011 – India's government is drafting a special policy for rooftop solar installations, Tarun Kapoor, joint secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), said today, the Hindu Business Line reports.
Kapoor said the government was considering several options to encourage the power sector to invest in such units. A special conference will be held on December 20 in New Delhi, with electricity distribution companies to help the government see why, given a 30% capital subsidy, the rooftop solar business has not flourished in India.
Kapoor suggested that the industry might not be aware of the potential of the rooftop solar.
He stressed the importance of net metering, which allows a household to get power from and feed it into the grid and pay only for the net consumptiom.
Regarding India's solar ambitions, Kapoor said the government was sure the country would achieve the targeted 1,100 MW of installed solar power capacity by 2013.
