Indian telecommunications company Bharti Airtel Ltd (BOM:532454) on Monday said it will purchase 23,000 MWh of renewable energy by the final quarter of the 2023/2024 fiscal year to power six Edge data centres of its data centre company Nxtra.

Airtel has signed agreements to acquire stakes in the renewable energy project companies set up by Continuum Green India Pvt Ltd and Vibrant Energy Holdings Pte Ltd -- Continuum MP WindFarm Development Pvt Ltd and Egan Solar Power Pvt Ltd. The former will supply power from solar and wind power projects to Airtel’s Edge data centres in Madhya Pradesh, while the latter will supply solar power to the company’s Edge data centre in Vijaywada.

Including these agreements, the total contracted renewable energy capacity for Nxtra data centres will surpass 274,000 MWh, according to the announcement.

Nxtra aims to become a net zero company by 2031. It has data centres across more than 120 locations and plans to double its existing capacity to over 400 MW in the next few years.
