Mumbai-based solar panel glass manufacturer Borosil Renewables Ltd (NSE:BORORENEW) plans to invest INR 5 billion (USD 68.2m/EUR 58m) to double its production capacity to 900 tonnes per day, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported citing a top company official.

At present, the company produces 450 tonnes of solar panel glass per day, equivalent to 2.5 GW of solar farms, at its Bharuch plant in the state of Gujarat. With the brownfield expansion, the Bharuch plant would make enough glass in a day to equip 5 GW of plants, the PTI report states.

The new plant is expected to start production by July 2022. This would be the second time in five years that the facility doubles its production, Borosil Group’s managing director Shreevar Kheruka was quoted as saying.

Borosil has carved out a 40% market share in India’s solar glass business, while the rest of the domestic demand is met with imports from China and Malaysia, PTI says in its report.

The Borosil group produces laboratory and consumer glass products and is India’s first and only manufacturer of solar panel glass.
