India's Gujarat Borosil plans USD-64m investment in solar glass production - report

Indian firm Gujarat Borosil Ltd intends to spend around INR 4.35 billion (USD 63.9m/EUR 55.1m) to expand more than twofold its capacity for producing tempered glass for photovoltaic (PV) modules, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reports.

At present, the company has a manufacturing facility in Bharuch where it produces 180 tonnes of 2-mm tempered solar glass daily. Pradeep Kheruka, vice chairman of Gujarat Borosil, was cited as saying that the firm’s objective is to lift its manufacturing capacity to up to 400 tonnes per day by 2020, noting that the solar glass it makes is lighter and absorbs less solar energy and thus helps boost the efficiency of PV products by 30%.

The expansion plan envisages a new manufacturing line that will make 210 tonnes of tempered solar glass daily. To be set up at an investment at around INR 2.35 billion, it is planned to be put on stream in 2019. Following its commissioning, the already existing plant will be reconstructed, with its capacity to be raised to up to 200 tonnes daily.
