Indonesia's PLN to add 200 MW of solar to replace diesel generators

Indonesian state-owned utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) aims to install 200 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity as it tries to replace diesel power generators and lower its carbon footprint.

The company intends to spend USD 700 million (EUR 651m) on the project, it said on Saturday, quoted by Reuters. Its director Evy Haryadi has told the news agency that the initiative will be the first phase of a long-term plan to find a replacement for 1 GW of diesel power plants.

Details about the proposed solar projects and their expected commissioning were not available.

PLN has set a goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2060. The plan is underpinned by a target of deploying 4.68 GW of solar PV between 2021 and 2030.

The Jakarta-based utility’s ultimate goal is to expand its renewable energy fleet from 7.9 GW at the end of 2020 to 18.5 GW in 2025 and 28.8 GW in 2030.
