Ineos to get offshore wind power from Norther under PPA with Engie

Chemicals maker Ineos announced on Tuesday a deal with France’s Engie (EPA:ENGI) to buy green power from the 370-MW Norther offshore wind farm in Belgium.

From January 1, 2021, Ineos will be receiving the output from an 84-MW portion of the wind park. The company said that the electricity will initially be used by its existing production sites, while later, the offshore wind power will be supplied to Project ONE -- two new plants producing ethylene and propylene in Antwerp. John McNally, CEO of Ineos Project ONE, said this will be “the most energy efficient chemical complex of its kind in Europe”, with a propane dehydrogenation unit designed with a maximum level of electrification.

“In the coming months, we will continue to look at the options for further expanding the use of renewable energy,” McNally added.

The contract with Engie will reduce Ineos’ carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 1.15 million tonnes.

Norther is a project of Elicio NV, with a stake of 50%, Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp (TYO:8058), which holds 25% through Diamond Generating Europe, and Eneco Holding NV, also with 25%. Engie has contracted half of the offshore wind farm’s output. Exactly one year ago it said Google will be buying power from a 92-MW portion.
