Iberdrola inaugurates 496-MW Saint-Brieuc wind farm offshore France
Sep 19, 2024 16:25 CESTInfinity Power, jointly owned by Egypt’s Infinity and Abu Dhabi-based Masdar, is planning to develop up to 4 GW of renewable energy projects in Cameroon by 2035 to help meet the African country's critical power needs.
The company, which claims to be the largest African renewable energy provider, said on Thursday it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Cameroon West Regional Council.
Situated in Cameroon's Western Region, the projects will be developed in stages and are expected to incorporate solar, battery storage, wind, hydro, and biomass energy plants.
"This impressive facility, which will utilize wind and solar power amongst other technologies, has the potential to transform energy provision in the area, help bolster Cameroon’s economy, and deliver huge benefits to local communities,” commented Infinity Power's chief executive Nayer Fouad.
RENEWABLES TO MEET POWER NEEDS, BOOST INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT
Cameroon's Western Region boasts over 6 GW of renewable energy potential. However, it currently receives just 100 MW from the national grid for its 2 million residents, which is insufficient, as explained by Vincent Kitio from UN-Habitat, which will provide technical assistance for the projects. Infinity Power's initiative aims to harness the region's renewable resources to address the substantial energy deficit and boost industrial development.
Jules Hilaire Focka Focka, President of the Cameroon West Regional Council, commented further on the impact of the initiative on local development: "During the preparation of the Western Region Strategic Development Plan, the business community requested that energy generation should be the top priority as it will stimulate industrial development. The region experiences daily power rationings that are major barrier to social and economic development."
The projects in Cameroon are part of Infinity Power’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy capacity across Africa. The company has already operations or plans to develop projects in Egypt, Senegal, South Africa, Ghana, and Mauritania. Its operational portfolio includes 1.3 GW, with plans to reach 10 GW by 2030.
In May, Infinity Power, its co-owner Masdar, and Cairo-based partner Hassan Allam Utilities signed a land access agreement for their 10-GW onshore wind project in Egypt with the country’s government.
