Spanish electrical equipment manufacturer Ingeteam has been selected as technology partner in what is expected to be BP Plc’s (LON:BP) first fully owned and operated large-scale green hydrogen plant, a 133 -MW project developed next to its Lingen oil refinery in Germany.

Ingeteam will supply 20 units of its full skid solution equipped with 40 INGECON H2 E6000 rectifiers, responsible for energising the electrolysers. The contract also includes equipment commissioning works, the company said in a press statement today.

The Lingen green hydrogen facility, located 25 km (15.5 mi) from the Dutch border, will be capable of producing up to 11,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year to replace the consumption of grey hydrogen currently produced by carbon reforming. It will be initially powered by offshore wind energy under a power purchase agreement (PPA).

The site’s output has the potential to support industrial customers, such as steel and chemicals producers, thus helping in the decarbonisation of the production processes in the region, including at the Lingen refinery.

In July, the green hydrogen project was awarded funding by the federal ministry for economic affairs and climate action and the Lower-Saxony government, as part of the European IPCEI Hy2Infra programme, to support its development.

The Lingen refinery processes around 100,000 barrels of crude oil a day and produces heating fuels and chemical feedstocks. It is said to be the first to test renewable hydrogen at an oil refinery, which happened back in 2018.

Ingeteam decided to apply its power electronics and control electronics technology to the hydrogen production industry in 2020. It has so far supplied technology to energise electrolysers for projects in Belgium, Australia, Germany, Spain, the US, and Canada.
