Vistra agrees USD 3.25bn buyout of zero-carbon energy unit
Sep 19, 2024 11:01 CESTUS chip making giant Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC) has pledged to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in its global operations by 2040 in an effort to address climate change.
In a statement on Wednesday, the company said it will actively seek to cut its direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and develop more sustainable technology solutions, with plans to enhance the performance and energy efficiency of its products.
In line with the goal, the chip manufacturer intends to switch to 100% renewable electricity across its operations by 2030 and invest USD 300 million (EUR 275.2m) by the same year in energy conservation projects that will save around 4 billion kWh of electricity at its production sites. New US factories will be installed to comply with green building standards.
From a wider perspective, Intel will also work to reduce emissions across its value chain (Scope 3) through specific partnerships with suppliers and customers. The goal for these emissions is to be at least 30% lower by 2030 than they would be if no action on the matter is undertaken.
Commencing on the net-zero target, Intel’s executive vice president Keyvan Esfarjani said: “This will require significant innovation and investment, but we are committed to do what it takes and will work with the industry to achieve this critical mission.”
Intel noted that it will use credible carbon offsets to achieve the 2040 goal only if other options have been depleted.
