Chicago-based clean energy developer Invenergy LLC has placed into service its high-voltage Tealov Cardal transmission line in Uruguay, supporting the country’s clean power goals and reliable electricity operations.

The Cardal project encompasses a new 55-kilometre (34-mile), 500-kV high-voltage transmission line, a new 20-km, 150-kV transmission line and a new 500-kV substation. It connects to the Punta del Tigre substation and a 150 kV high-voltage line in Salto. Uruguayan state-owned power company Administracion Nacional de Usinas y Trasmisiones Electricas (UTE) operates the line under a 30-year lease agreement.

“Electric transmission is essential to the energy transition. As Uruguay quickly decarbonises its electricity matrix, Cardal will support resilience and reliability of the electric transmission grid,” Bryan Schueler, Executive Vice President and Construction Business Leader at Invenergy, commented in a statement on Friday.

Uruguay currently produces 98% of its electric generation from clean power, dominated by hydropower and wind energy, the developer noted.

The project was financed with the help of IDB Invest, a member of the Inter-American Development Bank Group via an innovative A/B Bond structure. A consortium of Uruguayan companies Saceem and Ingener was in charge of the design and construction.

Cardal marks Invenergy’s third project in Uruguay, where the company owns the 65-MW La Jacinta solar farm and 70-MW Campo Palomas wind farm.
