Clime Capital to invest up to USD 10m in Philippine solar firm UGEP
Sep 11, 2024 14:25 CESTInyanga Marine Energy Group has been selected to build the first-ever tidal power generation plant in Southeast Asia, a 1-MW station to be constructed in the Philippines.
The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract was awarded by Energies PH Inc which is working on the project through its affiliate San Bernardino Ocean Power Corporation, according to a statement released today.
The planned facility will be located at the remote Capul Island of Northern Samar, along the San Bernardino Strait. It will be equipped with Inyanga’s HydroWing tidal stream turbines.
The power generating site, which is scheduled to be completed in 2025, will feed the electrical network of Capul. The off-grid island currently relies only on a 750-kW diesel power plant, having only eight to 16 hours of electricity supply per day and suffering regular blackouts.
“As we embark on this pioneering tidal power plant for the Philippines, our vision is to replicate this in several off-grid sites all over the country to provide electricity in the hinterlands,” Energies PH’s chief executive Antonio Ver said.
The tidal power plant is part of a larger project that will see it connected to a microgrid network coupled with a solar power capacity and energy storage system.
San Bernardino Ocean Power Corp is working on several other tidal power sites to be deployed in San Antonio Island, Northern Samar and the Calintaan Island in Matnog, Sorsogon.
