Iran is planning to build a 1-GW solar park in the central province of Markazi, set to be the largest one in the country, Mehr News Agency reports.

Citing Saeed Farrokhi, the province’s deputy governor for economic affairs, the agency said that the complex will be installed near the city of Saveh, covering an area of over 2,000 ha (4,900 acres). Financing for the ambitious project is being provided by an unnamed UK-based Iranian investor.

Construction works on the project are set to begin in the near future, Farrokhi said, adding that the needed equipment has been secured for a 100-MW portion of the overall capacity.

At present, Iran supplies more than 80% of its power from fossil fuels, while only a small percentage is attributed to renewables. The country’s plan is to install 5 GW of new renewable energy capacity by the end of the sixth development plan of the Islamic Republic in 2022. Some 445 MW of facilities are currently under construction, according to the report.
