Iran intends to build a 1.5-GW solar park along the Tehran-Qom Highway in the central part of the country, IRNA reports.

The news agency on Friday quoted Mehdi Ahanin Panjeh, managing director of Qom Province Electricity Distribution Company, as saying that the development of the project is part of the utility’s efforts to lift solar power generation in the province and in the whole country. He added that the new photovoltaic (PV) park will help Iran strengthen its national power grid.

Meanwhile, Qom Province Electricity Distribution Company is open to entering 20-year guaranteed agreements with citizens willing to equip their homes with rooftop PV arrays, according to the report.

The Iranian government has taken steps to bolster the country’s renewable energy market, including an objective to install 5,000 MW of new renewable energy capacity by 2020 and an additional 2,500 MW by 2030. According to a recent report by IRNA, Iran plans to lift its installed wind and solar power capacity to 1,000 MW in 2019 from 400 MW at present.
