Iraq is planning to build a 750-MW solar park in the southern Al-Muthanna Governorate, the country's minister of electricity Adel Karim has said.

The government will support Al-Muthanna with the large-scale solar project and several smaller power stations to ensure enough electricity supply in the governorate, Karim said earlier this week at a meeting at the office of the governor.

At the meeting, Karim, governor Ahmed Manfi and the directors of the local energy distribution departments discussed the situation in the power sector in the province and the preparations for the summer season.

Iraq recently took measures to promote the use of solar power and agreed three major solar projects with a combined capacity of 2.75 GW which are expected to be connected to the grid in 2025.

These include a 1-GW contract with UAE's renewable energy company Masdar, a pact with TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) for a 1-GWp solar complex and 750 MW of solar capacity to be deployed by Chinese state-owned conglomerate Power Construction Corp of China (Power China).
