Iraq plans to manufacture solar power pumps

Iraq's State Company for Electric and Electronic Industries is planning to build a plant for solar power pumps and electrical transformers following recent government initiatives to expand solar power in the Arab country.

The transition to renewable energy in the local industry is an important stage as the state-owned company plans to rely on environmentally-friendly machines in the medium and long term, the state-owned company's director-general Sufian Al-Jabbouri told the Iraqi official newspaper Al-Sabaah.

The shift toward renewable power will include also setting up production lines for electrical transformers and solar power pumps, Al-Jabbouri said. He noted that these plans will be implemented gradually to include all factories of the company.

The plan for the factory comes after the Iraqi government recently took measures to promote the use of solar power. These include loans that are extended to citizens for the purchase of solar systems for their homes and deals for large-scale solar projects with international companies.

Last year, Iraq unveiled three large solar initiatives -- a 1-GW contract with UAE's renewable energy company Masdar, a pact with TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) for a 1-GWp solar complex and 750 MW of solar capacity to be deployed by Chinese state-owned conglomerate Power Construction Corp of China (Power China).
