The Iraqi cabinet has given the green light to a 750-MW solar project that Chinese state-owned conglomerate Power Construction Corp of China (Power China) is planning to build in the south of the Arab country.

The solar park will be located in Al Muthanna Governorate and will require about USD 520 million (EUR 483.99m) in investments, a spokesman for the Iraqi government said on Tuesday after a cabinet meeting headed by prime minister Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani.

The project will be implemented in two phases with the first of them involving the deployment of 250 MW of solar panels.

Power China's ambitions to enter the solar market in Iraq were unveiled in 2021. The 750-MW project was then said to be the first phase of a plan to deploy a total of 2 GW in the Arab country.

The large-scale scheme is one of three solar projects totalling 2.75 GW in capacity that are expected to be put into operation in 2025. The other two initiatives include a 1-GW contract with UAE's renewable energy company Masdar and a pact with TotalEnergies SE for a 1-GWp solar complex.

Meanwhile, al-Sudani affirmed the government's interest and continued commitment to investing in renewable energy during a meeting with a delegation from International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) earlier this week.
