Italy brought online 1.72 GW of photovoltaic (PV) parks in the first quarter of 2024 and ended the trimester with 32 GW of cumulative installed solar PV capacity, statistics by trade body Italia Solare show.

The commercial and industrial (C&I) and utility-scale sectors were the major contributors to the quarterly deployments, accounting for 35% and 34% of the new capacity deployments, respectively.

The largest year-on-year jump came in the utility-scale segment, which witnessed a 373% year-on-year surge thanks to the commissioning of eight solar parks in Lombardy (20 MW), Lazio (137 MW), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (24 MW), Sicily (40 MW), Sardinia (50 MW) and Puglia (10 MW). Meanwhile, the grid-connection of plants ranging between 20 kW and 200 kW that fall in the C&I category, rose by 106% in annual terms to 595 MW.

A total of 547 MW of PV arrays were brought online in the residential segment. While additions climbed by 4% on the year, Italia Solare expects installation activity to slow down and affect numbers from the second and third quarters following the end of the national Superbonus support scheme and credit issues.

By region, Lombardy and Lazio are the leaders in terms of newly-installed capacity in January-March, adding 304 MW and 229 MW. Veneto and Emilia-Romagna come next with 188 MW and 150 MW of energised plants.
