Italy covers 10.8% of May power supply with solar energy

Jun 13, 2014 - Italian solar power plants produced a total of 2.68 TWh of electricity in May, covering 10.8% of the country's electricity demand, Italian power grid operator Terna SpA (BIT:TRN) said.

Solar power production for the month increased by 10% year-on-year. In April, photovoltaics met 9.2% of the country's electricity needs with an output of 2.21 TWh.

Italy is one of the countries that covers the highest share of its electricity production with solar power. Despite the collapse of the Italian solar market in 2013, due to the end of the state's subsidy programme, some 2GW of newly installed solar capacity is expected in 2014.

In the first five months of 2014, Italian solar power systems produced a total 8.96 TWh of power, an 11% increase year-on-year, and covered 7.1% of the country's power demand.

Renewable energy sources accounted a total 41% of Italy's power production in May.
