Italy has the right conditions to boost green hydrogen

Italy, seen as one of the European leaders in renewable energy, also has ambitious plans to accelerate its development of clean hydrogen. With a generous supply of natural resources, a mature gas infrastructure network, and close connections to North Africa, many developments and investments continue to throw light on the country’s hydrogen potential.

According to a study by SNAM, demand for green hydrogen in Italy is likely to reach 9.5 million tonnes per year by 2050. Yet, there is a lot to be done before this point is reached.

In a recent webinar ahead of the World Hydrogen & Renewables Italy conference, experts said investment and cross-sector cooperation around the infrastructure for the various offtake industries for hydrogen need to be promoted, so that individual sectors can be ready for the deployment in the years to come. Providing extra incentives for the development and permitting of PV, wind, and storage projects in close proximity to the hydrogen backbone would be advantageous to the necessary scale-up of green hydrogen. Batteries will also be crucial instruments in helping wind and solar energy provide the constant flow of electricity that will be crucial for electrolysers to produce green hydrogen.

With a growing number of projects in the pipeline, developers are increasingly looking to connect with the right partners with the necessary expertise across the value chain, from engineering and construction, right through to finance and permitting, to enable projects to truly flourish. World Hydrogen & Renewables Italy, taking place in Milan on 2 – 4 May, is where stakeholders can network this spring and discuss the future of hydrogen in Italy and the region with renewable energy & hydrogen project developers, banks & investors, utilities, energy off-takers, government representatives.
