Renewable power generation was responsible for meeting 36.8% of the national electricity demand in Italy in 2023, rising from 31% in the previous year as the country boosted its installed capacity.

Generation from renewable power plants in the past year was 15.4% higher than in 2022, according to the latest statistics released by transmission system operator (TSO) Terna SpA (BIT:TRN).

Electricity production from hydropower plants (HPPs) was up 36.1%, while wind and solar farms lifted their annual output by 15.1% and 10.6%, respectively. Only geothermal facilities could not contribute to the overall increase of renewable power output as they recorded a 1.9% drop in their yearly generation.

The expanded renewables production reflects the 5.8 GW of newly commissioned capacity in 2023, up by 2.7 GW from the previous year.

In the meantime, the output of thermal power stations contracted by 17.4%, with coal-fired power plants producing 41.7% less electricity than in 2022. The decrease reflects the suspension of initiatives that were introduced for the sector at the peak of the gas crisis.

Italy’s total power consumption declined by 2.8% in annual terms in the past year to 306.1 billion kWh.
