Renewables production in Italy surged by 27.3% in the first half of 2024, overtaking fossil fuels for the first time, a recent report by the domestic power grid operator Terna SpA (BIT:TRN) showed.

The boost in renewables output was mainly driven by a 64.8% surge in hydroelectric power, with solar and wind energy collectively increasing by 14.6% during the January-June period.

Fossil fuels, in turn, saw a 19% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. The most significant fall of 77.3% was reported in coal-based production.

The country’s operational capacity of renewable energy sources rose by 3,691 MW, of which 3,341 MW was solar, as of the end of June, up 41% compared to the same period in 2023.

About 43.8% of the domestic energy demand was covered by renewable sources in the first six months of 2024, compared to 34.9% in the previous year, registering a historic record on a half-year basis. In June alone, renewables covered more than half of the country’s power needs.
