Chinese solar power products maker JA Solar Holdings Co Ltd (NASDAQ:JASO) said today it will supply 100 MW of photovoltaic (PV) modules for the first of a trio of large-scale solar projects in Zimbabwe.

The order was made by China MCC17 Group, which is building one of the plants, more specifically the one that is located in Munyati. The other two contractors are ZTE and Intratrek Zimbabwe.

The three projects will have a combined capacity of 300 MW and involve a total PV module contract value of USD 544 million (EUR 498m). Of this, USD 179 million was won by JA Solar, it said.

Construction work on the solar parks is seen to start near the end of 2016 or in early 2017. The plants are expected to be completed by the end of 2017.

“Winning the contract to supply PV modules to the Zimbabwe project not only provides opportunities for JA Solar to establish stronger relationships in Zimbabwe but also helps lay a foundation for the company to develop relationships with other African countries,” said Xie Jian, executive president of JA Solar.
