Sep 19, 2024 16:25 CESTThe first solar park in Jamaica, with a capacity of 20 MW, has oficially commenced operations, the Jamaica Gleaner said on Thursday.
The photovoltaic (PV) facility is situated in Content district, Clarendon, parish. Its output will be fed directly into the power distribution network of Jamaica Public Service Co and is expected to be enough for the needs of up to 20,000 local homes per year.
The project was implemented for a total cost of JMD 7.9 billion (USD 61m/EUR 55m), according to the report. It is owned and operated by Content Solar Ltd, part of US-based diversified group WRB Enterprises Inc. The company started building the facility in the summer of 2015.
The solar plant will help Jamaica reach its goal of sourcing at least 20% of its total power from renewables by 2020 and cutting its carbon footprint by 35,000 tonnes per year.
