Jamaica's grid could be 12.5% renewable by end-2016 - report

Renewable energy is expected to account for 12.5% of Jamaica’s electricity mix by the end of 2016, up from 6% presently, after which the Caribbean country will pursue a target of 20% through 2030.

Energy minister Phillip Paulwell said so yesterday, as cited by local newspaper The Gleaner. Paulwell’s own view, however, is that Jamaica should aim for a 30% renewable power share. The country is to deploy 78 MW of renewables by March 2016.

At the very end of July, the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) issued a Request for Proposals (RFPs) for up to 37 MW of additional renewable energy sources, to be developed on a Build, Own and Operate (BOO) basis. Applications can be submitted by January 27, 2016.

The projects under the latest RfP should be of capacity greater than 100 kW.
