Queensland Hydro picks contractors for 2-GW pumped storage project
Sep 18, 2024 6:05 CESTBelgian marine contractor Jan De Nul Group announced that its consortium with South Korea’s LS Cable & System has secured a contract to supply, install, and test three subsea cables for the Princess Elisabeth Island project off the coast of Belgium.
These 220-kV alternating current cables, with a combined length of 165 km (102.5 miles), will transmit the offshore wind power flowing into the Princess Elisabeth Island to Belgium's high-voltage onshore grid.
The Princess Elisabeth Island, an artificial energy island currently under construction by a Jan De Nul joint venture, will be located some 45 km off the Belgian coast. It is designed to be a central hub, collecting and transmitting not only the electricity generated by the 3.5-GW Princess Elisabeth wind zone but also serving as a future connection point for other North Sea countries like the UK and Denmark.
The island, which will primarily house transmission infrastructure, will boast enough capacity to power roughly 3.5 million Belgian households with clean, renewable energy.
The contract awarded to the Jan De Nul and LS Cable & System consortium covers everything from design and engineering to production, transportation, installation, and final testing of the three cables.
LS Cable will focus on the design and production of the cables at its South Korean facility. Jan De Nul, leveraging its fleet, will handle the tasks of transporting, installing, and protecting the cables between the island and the Belgian coast.
The installation phase is scheduled for 2028, Jan De Nul said.
