Japan installed 232.9 MW of new wind capacity in 2022, bringing the total capacity in operation to 4,802 MW, the Japan Wind Power Association (JWPA) announced today, based on preliminary figures.

In 2022, as many as 72 new wind turbines were connected to the grid. With the new additions, Japan ended the year with a total of 2,622 machines in operation.

JWPA says that the country deployed 1.6 times more wind energy when compared to the capacity added in 2021.

In regards to offshore wind, at the end of 2022, Japan had 135 MW of installed capacity, including semi-offshore wind farms accessible from coastal areas.

At present, the country has one operational large-scale offshore wind farm. The 84-MW Noshiro Port plant commenced power generation at the end of December 2022.

Last year, the country also decommissioned seven wind turbines with a combined capacity of 4.8 MW, JWPA pointed out.
