Japanese ceramics specialist NGK plans 40 MW of solar projects

Japanese ceramics company NGK Insulators Ltd (TYO:5333) plans to install about 40 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays at its manufacturing sites by fiscal 2025.

According to a press statement released on Thursday, the company intends to deploy solar panels not only at home in Japan but also in China, Thailand, Poland, Belgium and Mexico. It has already made a decision with regard to PV installations in Poland and Thailand and has some other projects under planning.

In Poland, the company’s local unit is getting ready to install 15.1 MW at two factories by fiscal 2024 – one in Gliwice, Silesia Province and another in Dabrowa Gornicza, Silesia Province. The first facility will accommodate both rooftop and ground-mounted arrays, while the second will get solar on land only.

In Thailand, the local subsidiary will deploy large-scale rooftop PV systems totalling 4.25 MW, with operation due to start in fiscal 2023.

Generating renewable power in-house is part of the company’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2050. Under a roadmap drawn up by NGK, it has to cut emissions by 25% compared to fiscal 2013 levels by fiscal 2025.
