Japanese trading company Marubeni Corp (TYO:8002) announced on Tuesday it will receive government support for its 30 MW Southern Akita floating offshore wind demonstration project.

The project features two wind turbines each with a capacity of over 15 MW to be built off the southern coast of Akita Prefecture. It was awarded under the Green Innovation Fund Project from Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Marubeni said.

Southern Akita is scheduled to commence commercial operation in autumn 2029.

NEDO’s fund programme provides support for research, development, demonstration, and social implementation for up to 10 years to aid companies eyeing carbon neutrality by 2050.

Southern Akita is controlled by a consortium led by Marubeni's subsidiary Marubeni Offshore Wind Development Corp (MOWD); special purpose company Akita Floating Offshore Wind Corporation; Tohoku Electric Power Co Inc.; Japan Marine United Corporation; TOA Corp; Tokyo Seiko Rope MFG CO LTD; Kanden Plant Corporation; JFE Engineering Corporation; and Nakanihon Air Co Ltd.
