Japan's NEDO to back renewable energy development in Myanmar

Jan 18, 2012 - The Japanese New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO) said Tuesday it had agreed to cooperate with Myanmar in the area of renewable energy, energy conservation and environmental technologies.

NEDO signed a cooperation agreement with the Rural Energy Development Committee of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar on January 13, 2012. Under its terms, the organisation and the local government will jointly develop an action plan for the introduction of renewable energy technologies in Myanmar; back the launch of stand-alone green energy power solutions; and organise seminars on renewable energy and related topics.

Myanmar's power consumption has grown about three times in 20 years and is seen to rise again threefold by 2030. The local government seeks to source 15% to 20% of the republic's electricity from renewables by 2020, NEDO said.
