UK construction group Galliford Try Holdings PLC (LON:GFRD) said today it has been tasked with building a GBP-65-million (USD 74m/EUR 75m) factory in Blyth, Northumberland for UK subsea cable manufacturer JDR Cable Systems Ltd.

The new 46,000 sq m (495,140 sq ft) manufacturing facility will be located on the site of the former Blyth power station.

“The appointment of Galliford Try and the start of construction represents a major milestone in the realisation of our new high-voltage subsea cable manufacturing facility,” said James Young, chief strategy and compliance officer at JDR.

JDR, part of the TFK Group, reached a final agreement on government support for the GBP-130-million project in June.

The new factory, planned to open in 2024, is part of JDR’s plans to broaden its product portfolio to cater to the growing global offshore renewables energy market. The company will add high-voltage export and long-length array cables to its existing capacity.
