Australian energy infrastructure company Jemena and Spanish solar developer Solarig have teamed up to develop green hydrogen production and blending projects in New South Wales.

The companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining their partnership, Jemena said on Tuesday. The pact will pave the way for a study that will assess the feasibility of producing green hydrogen and injecting it into the Australian firm’s gas distribution network for use by homes, businesses and industrial customers.

The partners will initially focus their efforts on projects in regional New South Wales, planning to blend up to 35 terajoules of renewable hydrogen annually with gas. The green hydrogen volumes will be produced with renewable electricity purchased from Solarig-developed projects.

The collaboration will create one of the first commercial renewable hydrogen blending schemes in Australia. Provided that the outcome of the initiative is positive, Jemena and Solarig will develop additional projects.

“We are going to need a mix of renewable energy fuels to ensure Australia can reach net zero, while still delivering safe and reliable energy. Forming these types of relationships is essential to developing a robust renewable gas sector,” said Jemena’s managing director David Gillespie.
