Johnson Matthey Plc (LON:JMAT) has announced it will provide the methanol technology for the largest e-methanol plant in South America, the Paysandu eFuels project developed by HIF Global in Uruguay.

The British sustainable technologies company last week said it has been selected as the methanol licensor for the USD-4-billion (EUR 3.7bn) project, which would produce e-methanol by using electrolytic hydrogen and waste carbon dioxide (CO2) from an ethanol plant. The e-methanol is intended for the marine market and for use as a feedstock to produce e-gasoline. The facility is expected to have a production capacity of 700,000 tonnes per year of e-methanol. Its construction is planned for 2025.

The news follows a successful demonstration of Johnson Matthey’s eMERALD technology in the HIF Haru Oni eFuels demo plant in Chile, where JM licenses its technology and supplies the catalyst.

Johnson Matthey is also working with HIF Global to support the development of HIF Global’s other planned projects in the US, Tasmania and Chile.

HIF Global, meanwhile, has just announced it has secured USD 164 million from existing shareholders and Idemitsu Kosan Co Ltd.
