Jordan has developed a roadmap for green hydrogen as the country is seeking to utilise its natural gas infrastructure and renewable energy resources to become a regional green energy hub, energy minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh said last week.

The roadmap will be followed by the development of a comprehensive strategy outlining opportunities, applications, and the legal framework and regulations for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen, Al-Kharabsheh said at a conference in Istanbul.

The minister noted that the Jordanian government is working to identify the infrastructure which will serve as the backbone for large-scale green hydrogen projects planned to be realised in the country. This will enhance attractiveness and cost competitiveness for international investors and developers who have expressed interest in investing in the production and development of green hydrogen and ammonia projects in Jordan.

Al-Kharabsheh further added that the establishment of the Jordanian Gas Transmission Pipeline (JGTP) is a strategic component of Jordan's energy infrastructure. Combined with the country's strategic location, it enables the export of large quantities of natural gas or green hydrogen, the minister commented.

Jordan is actively striving to join the group of countries in the region that have significant aspirations for the emerging green hydrogen market. The Kingdom has witnessed the signing of several memoranda of understanding in recent months. The last four are related to feasibility studies aimed at developing production capacity for up to 1.5 million tonnes of green ammonia. Five more pacts are expected to be signed during the COP 28 summit which begins at the end of the month in Dubai, Al-Kharabsheh said earlier this month.
