Jordan's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has sealed deals with four companies to conduct feasibility studies aimed at developing production capacity for up to 1.5 million tonnes of green ammonia annually in the kingdom.

Energy minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh on Monday signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Kawar Energy Company, Philadelphia Solar Energy Company, Amarenco MENA Services and Germany's Enertrag.

Kawar Energy is looking into setting up a production facility with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia, while Philadelphia Solar Energy Company is interested in establishing a plant that can produce between 100,000 and 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year, the energy ministry announced on Monday.

Amarenco aims to establish a facility for the production of 1 million tonnes of green ammonia. In turn, Enertrag's plan involves creating a site capable of producing 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia.

The MoUs outline the general framework for cooperation between the government and the private sector to facilitate the implementation of initial feasibility studies within a year, Al-Kharabsheh said. Upon completion of the initial studies by the companies and based on the results, the ministry will enter into framework agreements which are expected to eventually result in final investment agreements for projects, the minister added.

Speaking after the signing of the memoranda, Al-Karabsheh said Jordan aspires to be a key player in the region in the production of green hydrogen, especially since the share of renewable energy reached 27% of the country's power mix by the end of 2022.

The latest pacts follow the signing of three MoUs in the area of green hydrogen production and Al-Kharabsheh said that five more pacts with companies interested in producing the green molecule in Jordan will be signed during the COP 28 summit in Dubai later this year.
