Jordan, UAE team up to study 2 GW of wind projects

The United Arab Emirates and Jordan have joined forces to explore the development of 2 GW of wind projects as part of a broader renewable energy partnership between the two countries.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Jordan's energy minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh and UAE's minister of industry and advanced technology and chairman of renewables major Masdar, Sultan Al-Jaber, on the sidelines of the COP27 summit in Sharm El-Sheikh.

In addition to studying the development of wind power, the two countries will exchange expertise and technology in the area of green energy and will work together to set up qualification and training programmes for engineers and experts in green technology, the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said on Wednesday.

Al-Kharabsheh noted in the statement that Jordan has 2,526 MW of green generation capacity in operation and the share of renewable energy in the country's power mix was 29% in the first seven months of this year. In 2021, renewable power plants produced 5.5 TWh, corresponding to 26% of the electricity mix.

The minister affirmed that Jordan is seeking to boost this share to 50% by the end of this decade.
