The programme that provides financial support for the installation of solar heaters and solar panels on roofs across Jordan is witnessing great demand as it helps local households reduce their electricity bills, Jordan's energy minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh said on Monday.

The Arab country has launched the second phase of the programme under which the state covers 30% of the cost related to the installation of a solar heater or a photovoltaic (PV) system on residential buildings.

In the first phase of the programme which took place in 2020 and 2021, a total of 4,500 solar installations and 35,000 solar heaters were set up in various governorates of the kingdom in cooperation with banks, local associations and energy companies.

The funding programme targets low to middle-income groups and citizens must meet certain criteria to benefit from it. Such criteria include the requirement that applicants must not have benefited from the first phase of the programme, the applicant must be the head of a family and the income of the husband and wife must not exceed JOD 1,500 (USD 2,115/EUR 2,147) per month.

(JOD 1.0 = USD 1.410/EUR 1.431)
